Despite its ease of use, Twitter is not just another platform for internet marketers to tweet out hype. From inception, Twitter was developed as a micro-blogging platform to enhance communications within a corporate structure. The concept worked so well intra-company, that the blogging platform with its quick response time, grew to the Twitter we now use and love today.
Despite Twitter's amazing growth curve, analysts note that current growth is more prevalent outside the U.S. and that U.S. visitors are down 30% since the 3rd quarter, 2010. (The Neilsen Company).
To make sure that this dynamic doesn't hurt your internet marketing business, you must develop your strategies properly and take account of the evolving U.S. social media audience and their preferences.
To make Twitter work for your internet marketing, you must first learn how to 'work it' on Twitter. Here are the power points to get your Twitter mojo in high gear:
* Join the party. Initiate or join a Twitter Chat, an online conversation pertaining a certain topic at a specified time. You could use Hashtag to document that chat and reconfigure it and add more of your own specialized content and ideas to expand your audience.
* Mingle. I try to do a 'triple mingle each da. Make sincere effort to strike up a conversation with 3 new someones each day. Comment on their posting. Ask a pointed question. Thank them for provided information. Try to generate a conversation that asks for a response. You won't always get one but you'll be surprised at how often you will.
* Follow Back. Be supportive of those who support you. Your goal is to establish credibility by building a conversation as a platform to get folks to know more about you and your interests. It is not simply to have the largest Twitter list.
* Acknowledge Publicly. Thank your supporters publicly. This could include participating in memes like #FridayFollower (#FF) in which users highlight other Twitter users that they think are worth following. Same concept in play for #MarketerMonday (#MM).
* Connect. Connect your Twitter account to LinkedIn and Facebook to distribute your new content.
* Tell Jokes. Humor always wins the day. Tell a humor story about your or your company. It helps people remember you.
* Share. And, make it easy to share more. Add sharing tools to help your readers distribute your valuable content to others. This can happen by lists following you on Twitter or adding Tweetmeme, for example.
* Tally ho. Track your results to follow what works and what doesn't. Applications like HootSuite and TweetDeck are very useful in this regard. There is also TweetAdder3 and Twitalyzer.
Like any real popularity contest, getting your Twitter mojo on takes time and effort.
Remember to engage before you promote. If you observe the party rules, you will be the life of the party and add life to your internet marketing business. It isn't the biggest Twitter followers list that wins in the long haul.
