Thoughts and processes should never be limited or typecast. Look at business insurance. From office and warehouse spaces this particular type of insurance has now taken on a new role...that of becoming involved in sporting events. It may come as a surprise to some but the outlay for business insurance in the upcoming FIFA World Cup this month is over 9 billion dollars. And it's not about insuring football jerseys or the football itself! The tournament that begins in South Africa on the 11th of June has property coverage of over 3 billions pounds, a contingency coverage of around another 3 billion pounds and liability coverage of around 200 million. Lloyd's of London issued a statement to that effect. Even the stadiums and training venues have been insured. A decade back it would have been difficult to think of stadiums and sports events being insured under the umbrella of Business insurance, but with demarcating lines blurring and the field of sports becoming big business, it only makes sense that protection is sought for assets and against probable liabilities.
This outlay for the World Cup insurance brings one fact into the spotlight....that business as a term has largely expanded to incorporate many fields that were earlier not considered conventionally as business. And consequently business insurance has kept pace with this expanding requirement. It is a measure of the caution of savvy businessmen who seek to protect their investment in any form, be it people or events or property that they have invested in...thus making business insurance a field that is dynamic and in a state of constant flux. Companies and online portals offering business insurance thus have to constantly tweak and upgrade their products in order to encompass the new client requirements.
In fact business insurance is now expanding its parameters to include scripted policies, where policies are custom made to suit specific and highly individual client needs. It could be an amalgam of two or other policies or it could be something completely off-the-rack. A number of people make a living based on their appearance sand physical attributes and it's a business expenditure for them to ensure that these physical attributes and appendages are protected and an income is assured in case of any damages. Those of the old school of thought may consider this a fad and over the top but the point here is that business can be generated from anywhere and it is up to the insurance service provider to look after and protect the business in whatever form it may be.
Unique or generic, the primary goal of business insurance to provide a protective buffer for any legitimate business activity. When money and human effort is invested and expended on a legitimate business enterprise then business insurance providers need to look out for the safety and protection of that activity. No need is too small to be overlooked; no need is too different to be ignored.
